The video got uploaded to YouTube early that morning…
By the time I sat down for breakfast, it had 25,000 views.
Later that morning, I picked up a buddy from the airport. When I got home, the video had over 250,000 views...
By the end of the day, it had well over 7 million views on YouTube, and I was beyond ecstatic for our good friend, Calen Morelli .
Calen is the magician that tried selling weed to a cop <see video here>, and captured the whole thing on video. That video now has more than 15 million views on YouTube, and it made me wonder…
What is it about a video that makes it go viral?
Deep down we all want our passion...our work...our art to be shared with millions of people. But how in the world do we make that happen?!
Here are 5 elements of Calen’s video that made it go insanely viral…
1. Great timing
This video was released at the most opportune time.
Marijuana legalization and police disputes are both hot topics right now. Because of the relevance of these issues, Calen had a built-in audience ready to pass around this video.
By piggybacking off of two extremely hot topics, the video spread faster than any of us ever imagined!
The entire video was 1 minute and 12 seconds...so people could watch it quickly, appreciate it, then share it with everyone they knew.
Watch, laugh, send, repeat - that is how this video took off.
If it had been any longer it likely would have lost people’s attention and not been nearly as successful. It was short, sweet, and to the point...and in the end, it hit the viral video jackpot.
The video was a perfect companion to the conversation that was already happening.
Police officers have been making headlines recently and there is much debate over who’s at fault. Then you add in a contraband like marijuana and people cannot wait to see how things go down.
There are a lot of mixed feelings about both of those topics, and people have very strong opinions on either side. Thanks to social media, it’s easy to share your thoughts...and it definitely created some conversation.
4. Believable, yet unbelievable
The video was clear and easy to watch, yet somehow the bag of weed disappears right in front of us.
“What!! How did he do that?!”
There was something that everyone watching missed, and what better way to try and figure it out than asking a friend to take a look…
Calen created something extremely believable, with just a hint of doubt to keep people watching (and sharing!)
5. Simple title, simple concept
The title said it all: “Magician tries to sell weed to cops”
Calen wasn’t trying to be catchy or clever with the title, and by being straightforward it immediately sparked interest. People knew what it was about, but still had no clue what they were about to watch.
It was also easy for people to search. If you try to describe it to someone, you’re essentially giving them the title of the video.
Genius, Calen...pure genius.
Calen Morelli is by no means an overnight success. For years, he’s been working with world renowned magicians, growing his audience, and producing tons of magic that gets jaw dropping reactions. And with this video, he was able to reap the rewards of all those years of hustle and hard work.
